March 1, 2012: JA DISCO Bowl Raises $28,000 Twenty four teams came out to support Junior Achievement and celebrate funds raised to provide learning opportunities for more students; helping to meet the demand for our courses which teach skills like personal finance, career readiness, and owning a business. Junior Achievement of the Cape Fear Region's DISCO Bowl raised $28,000 which provides classroom programming to nearly 1,000 students in the Cape Fear Region. February 1, 2011:Junior Achievement Gives Early Finance Lessons The Star News recently attended a Junior Achievement class "in action" over at College Park Elementary. Volunteer Tony Miller spoke with correspondent Amanda Lisk "This group over here came up with the idea to have a food company to sell scary food," Miller said. "This group wanted to create a voice activated computer called VOX. We're talking about fifth graders." Read the entire front page article here. December 9, 2011:Junior Achievement is Mentioned as Part of the White House's Ways to Help Entrepreneurs. Today, the White House announced administrative and private sector actions that will help entrepreneurs grow their businesses and create jobs by increasing their access to capital and resources. They also commented on additional commitments including Junior Achievement Announcing Entrepreneurial Reinvention. Read the full press announcement here. September 9, 2011: Position Opening-Volunteer & Community Relations Manager Junior Achievement of the Cape Fear Region has an exciting part time opportunity in our Wilmington office.The Volunteer & Community Relations Manager implements and manages daily operations of all JA programs and assures that volunteers are secured, trained, and retained for program and special event needs. The position also increases public awareness for all programs, plans methods of volunteer recognition, assures program quality and expansion, maintains strong school relations, develops yearly planning calendar for all programs, and acts as a liaison to community stakeholders.Application deadline is end of day September 18th. August 30, 2011: Junior Achievement Kicks Off Pledge Drive with Words of Inspiration At our recent Board meeting, we asked everyone…what would you say if someone asked you why you are so compelled to sit on the JA Board?The answers were inspiring and stories included how JA fills a gap and how students gain meaningful knowledge.Further, those in the room shared how they had personally benefitted from JA and knew first hand of the lasting positive impact of JA programs.Have you ever considered giving to JA or getting involved?Please consider donating online or calling us to learn more about our current work and opportunities for involvement. July 24, 2011: School Drop Out Rates Add to Fiscal Burden This week NPR will be airing a five-part series on America's dropout crisis. To give you an idea of what that means, just under four million kids begin ninth grade every year, but about a fourth of them don't make it to graduation. That's almost a million dropouts every year. According to one estimate, from the American Council on Education, there are currently 40 million Americans who never graduated from high school. That is an enormous cost for them as individuals, for the rest of society. July 13, 2011: Companies Help Empower Youth to Own Their Success As Junior Achievement's fiscal year and the academic school year wrap up, we pause to review our successes from the year and reflect upon our wonderful partners. We want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to the top 3 companies which provided the most volunteers. This year, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, Corning, and First Bank led the business community; providing volunteers who went into school classrooms, shared real world examples, and delivered the Junior Achievement curriculum. July 6, 2011: Education Week Teacher: Money Matters, the Case for Teaching Financial Literacy The National Financial Educators Council defines financial literacy as "possessing the skills and knowledge on financial matters to confidently take effective action that best fulfills an individual's personal, family and global community goals." Money Matters, the Case for Teaching Financial Literacy, an article from Education Week discusses the case for teaching financial literacy, and highlights Junior Achievement. June 30, 2011: Junior Achievement Partners with Business and Community Volunteers to Enhance the Classroom Experience This school year, nearly 200 volunteers stepped up to deliver JA's programs in areas schools. Volunteers represented business leaders, retirees, parents, and college students. Due to the commitment of our volunteers, 225 classrooms received Junior Achievement's curriculum-which impacted approximately 4,662 students! May 27, 2011: Junior Achievement Raises Record Amount of Funds through Spring Golf Classic Junior Achievement's golf tournament grossed nearly $30,000, an increase of over 15% from the 2010 tournament. Thank you to the presenting sponsor AT&T, hole-in-one and hole sponsors, as well as the thirty team foursomes which golfed at Porters Neck Country Club to support Junior Achievement's programs. Funds raised enhance efforts to inspire and prepare youth to stay in school, graduate, find meaningful careers, and become contributing members of our community. May 20, 2011: Junior Achievement Named Recipient of Funds from Piedmont Natural Gas Rodeo Piedmont Natural Gas will donate a totalof $5,000 to local Wilmington charities as part of its Natural Gas Rodeo, an annual competition when teams of Piedmont employees come together from across the company's service area to display their technical and safety skills. This yearly event pairs teams in two categories (four-person and two-person teams), all of whom compete for the best time in events including the natural gas meter setup, backhoe operation, the pit dig and more. The two winning teams, one from eachcategory, earned the honor of selecting a Wilmington-based charity to receive a $2,500 donation. The selected charities are as follows: Junior Achievement of the Cape Fear Region and the North Carolina Land Trust. April 26, 2011: Junior Achievement Receives Governor's Medallion Award Governor Bev Perdue honored 21 individuals, organizations, and teams of volunteers at the Governor's Medallion Awards ceremony in the State Capital. Junior Achievement of the Cape Fear Region was one of two organizations statewide which received the Medallion of Honor and a certificate to recognize their service. Read the full release here. April 13, 2011: Junior Achievement Receives New Hanover County Volunteer Service Award Junior Achievement of the Cape Fear Region was the recipient of the 2011 New Hanover County Volunteer Service Award, which was presented in City Hall Chambers during the the Cape Fear Volunteer Center's awards banquet. April 1, 2011: Money Management is the New "Birds and the Bees" Talk – Use Financial Literacy Month to Kick-Start the Conversation April is Financial Literacy Month, and a recent national survey conducted by Junior Achievement and The Allstate Foundation shows why it's more important than ever to educate today's youth about money management, even if it's a difficult subject for parents to broach. When asked what their primary source of financial information was, 92 percent of respondents said their parents, yet less than half said their families discussed money management.
